Newcastle and AZ Alkmaar advance to quarterfinals

Newcastle easily booked their place in the quarterfinals with a convincing win over Greek leaders Olympiakos. Alan Shearer scored twice as Newcastle won 7-1 on aggregate. Keiren Dyer and Lee Bowyer also scored for the Magpies.

AZ Alkmaar, currently second in the Dutch Eredivisie (1st division), continued their impressive season with a 2-1 win against Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk. Van Galen and Meerdink scored the goals as Alkmaar advanced 5-2 on aggregate. Alkmaar are four points ahead of traditional Dutch powerhouse Ajax of Amsterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie table, and have now advanced further in Europe than their Amsterdam rivals.
