England 4 - 0 Northern Ireland
Joe Cole made an impressive debut in England's starting eleven as his goal two minutes into the second half opened the scoring. Moments later, Michael Owen scored after a great passing sequence from Rooney and Lampard. England's third goal in a nine minute span came as a Northern Ireland defender turned a Wayne Rooney pass into an own goal to give England a 3-0 lead. Frank Lampard completed the scoring when his shot deflected off the head of Colin Murdock and into the Northern Ireland goal. Although the victory was important for England, what may prove to be even more vital for their World Cup aspirations is the emergence of Joe Cole as the solution to England's left midfield problem.
